Description;; Union Rags is a spectacular looking individual. He's a big, imposing colt who towers over most of his competition on the track. He's a big, mature-looking colt, with a wide blaze going from right below the forelock and ending at the end of his muzzle, covering up half of both nostrils. His legs, sturdy as they are, are covered in white socks, save one, which is his left foreleg. Union Rags is a dark bay colt, with a black mane and tail. He's a real easy-going colt, never acting up or misbehaving while out on the track for work-outs or races. He does tend to get a little hot and worked up on race day, but that's just how he is.
History;; Union Rags was born on March 3, 2009. He was sired by Dixie Union and was out of a mare named Tempo, herself sired by Gone West, a grandson of the great Secretariat, making Union Rags a great-great grandson of the champion thoroughbred. As a yearling, his owner, Phyllis Mills Wyeth, on the advice of tax accountants, sold the colt for $145,000 dollars at the local yearling sale. She had some regrets, however, and bought the colt back at the Ocala Breeders' Sale for twice as much as she sold him for. The Kentucky-bred colt was back home. As a two-year-old, he was sent to Michael Matz of Barbaro fame to be trained. He won his debut race at Delaware Park in July of 2011. That started all the winning. Jumping up in class to a Grade II race, the Saratoga Special Stakes. Again, he walked off the track a winner, even with the muddy track. Raced just once more before the Breeders' Cup, Union Rags once again won, this time the Grade I Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, even with all the trouble he encountered. He was blocked late by a wall of horses, having to be checked before finding room in deep stretch. He won by over five lengths. He lost the Breeders' Cup Juvenile by a head. As a three-year-old, he won the Fountain of Youth by four lengths, finished third in the Florida Derby by a length and finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby by seven and a quarter. He skipped the Preakness and came to the Belmont Stakes a fresh horse. He was in fourth the whole way around before squeezing through down on the rail and winning the Belmont Stakes by a head.
